Red River Valley Amateur Radio Club
Amateur Radio in and around the Red River Valley Area of Northeast Texas
First up today, an odd little tid-bit.
1) If you are using a Toshiba laptop to program radios, do not transmit on any 440Mhz channel/frequency in the general vicinity of the computer. It will not only instantly shut the computer off, it may also auto-pooch your RTC (Real Time Clock) settings.
2) CTCSS (in any iteration) is not possible whence using digital modes. So if you’ve switched to auto switch mode for digital operation, and tropospheric ducting is in play, You may hear things you didn’t want and neither your radio nor the repeater is at fault. It’s an operator headspace issue.
3) If CHIRP is giving you errors, (failure to read or write) in Windows (any version), Try using Linux. The drivers are already installed, and it works flawlessly.
4) If your radio (HT) suddenly seems to be “locked up”, pull out your cheaters and have a closer look at the screen. If you see a little padlock thingy icon … you’ve found your problem. This would be an opportune time to go find the silly little booklet that came with the radio, and … RTFM! (Read The Fine Manual)
5) Home made ice cream, on a hot Paris Texas Sunday afternoon, will take at least two bags of ice to make.
Okey dokey. Now it’s your turn.
Cogent advice for new hams:
Never look down the end of an energized feed line with your remaining good eye.
